Performance Feedback in the age of Remote Work

We are in a fully global experiment…some of us willingly, some unwillingly. Any critical assumptions leaders have made about working from home are being tested and in many cases, absolutely destroyed. To be fair, there are many roles where presence is a crucial component to performance (ie. in store retail, health services, restaurants…pretty much any thing where in person service is required) but for most…remote work may become the new normal…or at least and uncontested employee ability. That’s not to say working in a central location with your peers is not with without its benefits and working remotely is not without its challenges, but the argument that presence = performance is being firmly rejected.

The new reality is putting greater pressure on managers and also highlighting legacy systems that don’t fit in a remote environment. Managers who were bad at setting performance expectations in the past are being fully exposed and the micromanagers are burning themselves out…quickly in an attempt to continue a top-down task management style. The importance of clear and frequent communication is more evident than ever. And the true inability to see the daily performance of your employees is getting more and more evident.

At Ohos, we’ve long realized that the traditional top down feedback process is broken. No manager has a complete and accurate picture of how their employees are showing up on a daily basis, especially true now that they aren’t even in the same building. We continue to improve our platform to include more goal and project tracking over time and guidance for regular manager one-on ones. And we still have the same paradigm shifting real-time multi-point feedback platform that helps employees and managers see how expectations are being met (or not.)

We hope and pray everyone is staying safe, staying well, and following proper guidance on social distancing. This is an unprecedented time and while we often think of change in terms of loss (first), there may be a great deal to gain from the lessons we learn and the reality in which we are forced to operate. As companies change their practices to embrace a more remote workforce during and after this global pandemic, Ohos will be here to support your needs for a decentralized and continuous performance feedback, goal tracking, manager accountability, and succession planning needs.
